It’s not minutes later when several guys are laughing as they come around the corner, Simon among them. His eyes meet mine and my breath hitches.

“Hey, Simon, you coming?” one of the guys says to him.

“In a minute.” He gives me a lopsided grin and strolls over to me. “Hey, beautiful, you look dazzling.”

I laugh. “I think the magic shield is interfering with your vision.”

“Whatcha you doing in there?” He leans against the nearest bookshelf. “Looks boring.”

Again, I don’t know how much I’m able to share, so I downplay it. “Just some sorting and filing for Headmaster Travers.”

“You know I can help.” He blows on his fingers and a gust of wind ruffles pages of magazines on the other side me, but nothing on the table I’m working on.

“How is trying to blow away the papers helping?”

“Sorry,” he gives me an impish smile, “was just testing out the barrier. I’ve heard of these, but never actually seen one in person. Textbooks say that no magic can get through them except from the person who created it.”

“Why haven’t I read that?”

“I’m taking senior-level advantage magic theory.” He taps the side of his head. “I may be a jock, but I’ve got a brain too. Now you try. Send your magic out of the shield.”

“There’s no rocks or anything.” I frown, looking around the library.

“The bookshelves — they’re made from trees.”

I let out a breath, focusing on my core, on the center of me where my magic pulses with every heartbeat. It’s warm and solid. I push it forward when it ricochets back at me. I’m knocked into the table, papers fluttering to the ground.

“Whoa, I’m sorry. What happened?” Simon dives for me, but the magical barrier blasts him back.

“Are you okay? Did you know that would happen?” I ask.

He shakes his head, standing, his eyes wide. “No way. It should have worked. The magic within the barrier shouldn’t have been effected like that.”

I grunt, pushing myself off the table and gathering up the fallen pages. “Well, never going to try that again.”

“Crap, Jazel, I’m sorry. I-It shouldn’t have done that.”

“Well, clearly it just did.” I wave the papers at him. And my head is starting to pound.

“It’s a protective shield. "

“I know.”

“That’s not what I meant. Think of it this way, a mage battling someone or something would need a way to counter-attack. With this blocking my power and yours…” he lets out a whistle. “Well, it would almost be like a prison. Sealing whoever was in and not allowing anything else in.”

I shudder, placing the papers on the table.

Why would Headmaster Travers erect a shield like this?

“May I make it up to you?” Simon asks. “Like take you out to dinner sometime?”

“Sure.” I smile. “How about tonight?” It would be good to get away from this school for a bit.
